Brush Up On Your Mobility

You'd be surprised what you can do with a few everyday items. Obviously there are all sorts of different things we can use when we're in the gym, but at home, we sometimes just have to make do (even though I had to go out to Homebase specifically to buy this).

This brush shaft has been fantastic for helping clients open up their shoulders and get blood flowing to areas that probably haven't been well oxygenated for years. I I'm working with one person in particular to help them ease up an impingement which has been causing problems for a long time, and in my own training I've bee using it for myofascial release and general movement prep.

One routine I've been working on with the brush shaft involved moving it in a kind of a figure-8 shape around your head. Follow along with the steps below:

  1. Start with the brush in both hands, using one arm to push the other into a gentle stretch directly out to the side of your body. You should feel some heat start to build in your bicep.

  2. Maintaining the stretch, move the arm closest to your midline move slowly behind your head, taking the brush shaft up and over to gently supinate the forearm of the outstretched side.

  3. Change the position of the arms, now bringing the extended arm in to push the other one out into the same stretch on the other side.

  4. After a few seconds, bring the now-closer arm over your head, moving it in front of your face/chest, to mimic the starting position in point number 1.

  5. The same stretch from point 1 should now be felt in the opposite arm.

  6. Repeat these steps a few times, making sure to also do them in reverse.
